#28 Love and Care Night

A total of 35 people divided into 8 teams ministered at Portage Place.  The mall was fairly busy so all teams were occupied throughout the evening.
One Who Walks With Rocks
Our team’s first encounter was with a man who walked up to us and asked us if he could sing to us for a dime.  I said absolutely sing away.  His song consisted of repeating the word ‘yuh’ five times.  I thanked him for the song and gave him a $5 Tim’s card, and asked him what his name was.  His first response somewhat defiantly was, “I am a person just like you.”  I assured him he was and that we were equal.  He then said his name was “One Who Walks With Rocks”.  Iris then told him Jesus loved him and asked if we could pray for him.  He then went into a tirade with mixed English and Oji-Cree.  We didn’t understand most of what he said, except he also told us Jesus was a person.  He also told us his name had power, and he could disappear right in front of us if he wanted to.  We again asked if we could pray for him, but he continued speaking incoherently and seemed to become agitated and angry.  At that point, we walked away and started talking to Rose, one of the regulars.  I am wondering if we could have handled that situation differently, maybe we should have bound the spirit of anger.  I don’t know.  I was asking for discernment but didn’t receive any that I was aware of.  I always assume that someone who walks up to us is God sent, but sometimes the enemy sends someone to thwart our ministry.  I am still not sure.
We spent time talking to Rose, gave her a gift card, and prayed a blessing of peace and prosperity over her.  She always appreciates being prayed for.
Denominational Barriers
About that time a German Mennonite Youth Choir from Steinbach started to sing Christmas Carols in Center Court.  Beautiful music!  They also gave out packages of cello-wrapped homemade cookies with an inspirational message tucked inside.  I had a lengthy chat with some of the youth, thanking them and encouraging them in their gift of music.  Apparently, Tom also thanked them and offered to pray for anyone of them who needed healing of any kind.  The leader assured Tom they were fine.  One of the youth did want prayer for her stomach that was troubling her, but the leader said they would take care of the prayer themselves.  Unfortunate we cannot trust one another in the name of Jesus.
Matt also told us about offering to pray for one of the custodians, but he said he couldn’t have Matt pray because he was Catholic.
Eavesdropper
We then engaged a man named Bruce, who had a walker.  He said he had serious back problems, and pain in his legs.  He agreed to let us pray for him.  We prayed for his healing and release from pain – not sure of the results.  While we were praying I noticed a man at a nearby table get up and come and stand close to us.   He was listening to our conversation.
After we prayed for Bruce the man who had been listening in motioned to me to come to his table.  His name was Jeff and his wife was Sherry.  They were Christians from Garden Hill, had been married for 35 years, and were musicians.  His first question to me was to ask what religion we were.  I knew he was wanting an answer that would assure him that we weren’t some kind of cult or non-Christian group.  I also knew that most Northern Reserves in Manitoba have a Pentecostal church, so I said we are kinda like Pentecostals.  He smiled, I could tell I gave him an answer that satisfied him.  I then asked if we could pray for them.  He told us he had had cancer but was now told it was no longer there – but he wasn’t sure.  He also said that they were flying back to Garden Hill the next day, and they were nervous about the airline, as it wasn’t reliable and often not on time.  We prayed that his cancer would definitely be permanently gone, that the flight would be safe and on time, we blessed their marriage, and prayed for peace, health and prosperity for them.  They were both smiling and very grateful for the prayers.  What a wonderful opportunity – another Divine appointment.
It was now 9 and teams were gathering in Center Court.  I was able to talk to several team leaders about their experiences for the evening.  The theme seemed to be ‘Love and Care’.  No one reported any major miracles, but all reported having several prayer encounters where they were able to bring Jesus’ love to people.  A lot of gift cards were given out.  It was a Peace on Earth, Goodwill Towards Man kind of night – perfect pre-Christmas evening.
