Spirit Soul and Body: 7 Truths About Your Identity in Christ

Understanding your spirit soul and body is essential to knowing who you truly are in Christ. Although God’s Word teaches that we are three-part beings, very few Christians practice a functional understanding of this reality. In this article, based on the teaching by Andrew Wommack, we explore 7 truths about your spirit soul and body that will transform your identity and walk with God.

1. You Are a Three-Part Being: Spirit Soul and Body

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5:23). Even though God’s Word clearly teaches that we are three-part beings, most people only acknowledge a physical part and an emotional, mental part. They confuse soul and spirit as being basically the same thing.

Your spirit is your innermost part. Your body is the physical part that can be seen. Your soul is your mental, emotional part — your mind, will, emotions, and conscience. Understanding the distinction between your spirit soul and body is the foundation for everything else in the Christian life.

2. Your Spirit Cannot Be Accessed Naturally

You can feel both your body and your soul. If someone puts a hand on your shoulder, you know it. If someone speaks words of encouragement or criticism, your soul responds. You are constantly aware of how your body and soul feel.

However, your spirit cannot be accessed in any natural way. Jesus declared, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). There is no direct connection between the two. You cannot contact your spirit through your emotions or physical senses.

3. This Is Why Christians Get Confused

Here lies one of the great problems of the Christian life. If you don’t understand that spiritual reality can’t be felt, you’ll be confused when God’s Word says you have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead (Eph. 1:18-20). Without understanding spirit soul and body, you’ll search your body and soul wondering, “Where is this power? I don’t feel it!”

This apparent gap between your experience and God’s Word leads many to conclude, “It must not be true!” But the truth is found not in your feelings, but in God’s mirror.

4. God’s Word Is Your Spiritual Mirror

The only way to accurately perceive spiritual truth is through the Bible. Jesus said, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

James 1:23-25 compares God’s Word to a mirror. When you look into the Bible, you behold yourself in the spirit. Just as you trust a physical mirror to show you what your face looks like, you must trust God’s Word to show you what your spirit soul and body truly look like.

5. Your Born-Again Spirit Is Already Perfect

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God” (2 Cor. 5:17-18). Notice this doesn’t say “all things are becoming new” — it says old things have passed away and all things have become new. This is an accomplished fact.

Where did this complete change occur? Not in your body, and not yet in your soul, but in your born-again spirit! Your spirit was completely transformed the moment you accepted Christ.

6. Your Body and Soul Are Still Being Transformed

Your body hasn’t changed yet. If you were overweight before salvation, that didn’t change when you got saved. A time will come when you receive a glorified body (1 Cor. 15:53), but that hasn’t happened yet. Jesus purchased your glorified body, but it hasn’t been redeemed yet.

Your soul (mind, will, emotions) wasn’t instantly saved either. If you were depressed before getting saved, you’ll stay depressed until you renew your mind with God’s Word. Your soul can be transformed now as you renew your mind and conform your values to the Word of God (Romans 12:2), but it didn’t happen automatically.

7. Understanding Spirit Soul and Body Changes Everything

When you understand the relationship between your spirit soul and body, everything changes. You stop trying to “feel” saved and start believing what God’s Word says about your spirit. You stop wondering why you don’t feel powerful and start trusting that the same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in your born-again spirit right now.

This is not just theology — it is the key to experiencing victory, peace, and the fullness of God in your daily life. Your spirit is already righteous, holy, and complete in Christ. Your job is to renew your soul to that reality through God’s Word.

Jesus said if you don’t understand the parable of the sower, you won’t understand any parable. The three levels of fruit — thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and hundredfold — map directly onto the body, soul, and spirit you just read about. If this teaching on your three-part identity resonated, the companion teaching on Thirtyfold, Sixtyfold, Hundredfold: The Parable That Unlocks the Kingdom takes the same truth and shows you how to live from the spirit realm rather than for it.
