Spirit Soul and Body: 5 Keys to Understanding Your True Nature

Understanding spirit soul and body is one of the most foundational truths a Christian can grasp. When you were born again, something radical happened inside you. Jesus made you a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), and you can now commune with God just as a small child communes with their Father. In this article, we explore 5 keys to understanding your spirit soul and body and how this knowledge transforms everything.

1. How I Discovered the Truth About Spirit Soul and Body

Things really started to change when I began to understand spirit, soul and body. I met Andrew Wommack in the Winter of 2014 in Colorado while at a men’s conference. He does a fabulous job of explaining the relationship between your spirit, soul, and body.

In fact, he has an amazing gift to teach about God on a wide variety of subjects, so I highly recommend watching his videos and reading his articles. His material is all free. Andrew’s ministry helped establish me in a basic understanding about God, and I am forever grateful.

2. You Are a Three-Part Being

The Bible teaches in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that you are made up of three parts: spirit, soul, and body. Most people only think about the physical body they can see and the thoughts and emotions they experience. But your spirit is the real you — the part that was completely transformed when you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior.

Understanding how these three parts relate to each other is the key to walking in the fullness of what God has for you. When you don’t understand the distinction between your spirit soul and body, you can easily become confused about your identity in Christ.

3. Your Spirit Is Already Perfect

When you were born again, your spirit was made completely new. It is already as perfect and holy as it will ever be. Your spirit doesn’t need to grow or improve — it was re-created in the image of God (Ephesians 4:24). This is one of the most liberating truths about spirit soul and body.

The problem most Christians face is that they don’t realize their spirit has already been changed. They look at their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors — which come from the soul and body — and conclude that they haven’t really changed at all. But the truth is, your spirit is righteous, holy, and complete in Christ right now.

4. Your Soul Needs Renewing

While your spirit was instantly transformed, your soul (mind, will, and emotions) needs to be renewed through the Word of God (Romans 12:2). This is where the battle takes place. Your soul still carries old patterns of thinking and feeling from before you were saved.

The process of spiritual growth is really about your soul catching up to what has already happened in your spirit. As you renew your mind with God’s truth about who you are in Christ, your outward life begins to reflect the transformation that has already taken place in your spirit.

5. Understanding Spirit Soul and Body Changes Everything

When you truly understand the distinction between spirit soul and body, it changes how you pray, how you fight spiritual battles, and how you see yourself. Instead of trying to become something new, you realize you are already new in your spirit — and your job is to renew your mind to that reality.

This is not just theological information. It is practical, life-transforming truth that affects every area of your daily walk with God. I encourage you to study this topic deeply.
