Learn to Hear God’s Voice: 4 Powerful Keys to Union

If you want to learn to hear God’s voice, the first thing to settle is that you are not far away.

The question I get right after “how do I get healed” is this one: how do I hear God’s voice? People usually ask it the way you would ask for directions to somewhere distant. They assume the problem is separation — that God is up there, they are down here, and hearing him is a matter of shouting loud enough or living clean enough to get a reply.

That is not the problem. That has never been the problem.

You have already been made one spirit with the Lord (1 Corinthians 6:17). You have already been raised and seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). Christ is already in you (Colossians 1:27). You are not trying to establish a connection. You are learning to notice one that was finished at the cross.

Already know you want this?

Chris and I teach all of this live as a free two-hour online course, for any group of five or more. No fee, no offering, no upsell.

Learn to Hear God’s Voice by Starting From Union

Almost every frustration I hear about God’s voice traces back to the same root: people are trying to get to God instead of living from him.

In the parable of the sower, Jesus described three returns on the same seed — thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold. The seed never changes. The soil does.

Thirtyfold is the body realm, where faith is expressed through what you can touch and see. Sixtyfold is the soul realm, where you stand on promises, declare the Word, and war in prayer. Both are real responses to God, and both are honoured by him.

But the hundredfold is different. In the spirit realm you are not reaching for God at all. You already live from union with him. And it is remarkably hard to hear someone you are busy shouting across a canyon at — especially when he is standing beside you.

This is why people who learn to hear God’s voice from union hear him more easily than people who work at it. Striving is the static on the line. Rest is not laziness; it is what happens when your source stops being your own effort.

But there is something underneath even that, and most of us were never taught it. We preach the cross constantly and mention the incarnation once a year at Christmas. Yet the incarnation is where the whole thing turns. When God took on humanity in Christ, he did not borrow a body for a weekend errand. He joined himself to the human race permanently. What happened to that one man happened to humanity, because he took humanity into himself.

Which means your union with God is not a thing you manufacture by believing hard enough. This is the point where most people quietly give up on hearing him — they assume the connection runs on the strength of their own faith, so a weak week means a silent God. It does not work that way. Faith does not create the union. Faith recognises a union that was already accomplished without your permission and agrees with it.

So hearing him is not a gift handed to a spiritual elite. Anyone can learn to hear God’s voice, because it follows from what has already been done to humanity in Christ rather than from anything you brought. You are not the exception. There is no category of Christian who was left out of this.

His Voice Sounds in the Heart Realm, Not the Noise

There are two worlds: the physical realm you live in, and what I call the heart realm — the internal world Jesus called the Kingdom of God, the one Paul qualified as “Christ in us.”

Jesus said a good man brings forth good things out of the good treasure of his heart (Matthew 12:34-35). Notice the direction. Your internal world is the factory. The external world is the product. Not the other way around.

Most people try to hear God while standing in the physical realm with the volume all the way up — symptoms, bills, the news, the argument they had yesterday. Then they conclude God is silent.

He is not silent. You are standing in the wrong room.

The way through is not to fight the noise. It is to change rooms. Close your eyes, and use your imagination the way it was designed to be used — not to escape reality, but to immerse yourself in the truer one. Picture Jesus. See yourself abiding in him, because you are. The superior reality overwrites the inferior one, every time.

Learn to Hear God’s Voice Apart From the Shadowman

Learn to hear God's voice instead of the 5am voice of fear
The 5 a.m. voice of fear is not the voice you were made to answer.

At five o’clock one morning my eyes snapped open and my mind was already racing over a situation I could do nothing about. Before my feet hit the floor I was completely gripped.

In Ted Dekker’s The 49th Mystic there is a figure called the Shadowman — the voice of fear, the carnal mind, the illusion of separation. That is exactly what was talking to me at 5 a.m. And I have learned that you cannot fight an illusion. You can only turn on the light.

I did not rebuke anything. I put my earphones in and listened to the truth about the Father’s Agape love until the fog lifted. The anxiety dissolved, because it had never been real in the first place.

If you want to learn to hear God’s voice reliably, this is the skill that matters most. Here is the test I now use, and the one we teach:

The voice of fearThe voice of the Father
Condemns youConvicts a behaviour, never your identity
Rushes and panicsSettles you, unhurried
Says you are alone and disqualifiedSays you are his, come
Vague dreadSpecific, kind, doable
Drives youLeads you

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). That is not poetry. It is the most practical tool you own.

He Is a Person, Not a Channel

Here is where a teaching like this can go wrong, so I want to name it plainly.

It is possible to treat hearing God as a supply line. You want direction about a job, a diagnosis, a decision, so you learn the technique, get the answer, and go. God becomes a means to an end — useful, consulted, and fundamentally external to you. That is the contract mindset wearing spiritual clothes. It keeps the transaction and simply upgrades the product.

You are not joined to a channel. You are joined to a Person. The point of learning to hear God’s voice is not better information; it is that you are already one with the One speaking, and it would be strange to live in that union and never listen. Guidance comes, and it is genuinely useful. But it arrives the way a word from someone who loves you arrives, not the way a search result does.

Keep the person and the work together. The moment you separate them, you start using him.

His Word Carries Everything Needed to Fulfil It

Once you can tell his voice apart, the next fear shows up: what if I hear him and I cannot do it?

In the spirit realm that fear has no ground to stand on. If God speaks, his Word contains everything needed for its fulfilment. The seed contains the whole tree. If he says go, then in that word is everything required for the going.

This is also why righteousness matters so much. If you know you have been made clean in Christ, you know you always have access to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). You do not come on the basis of your own worthiness. Christ has qualified you (Colossians 1:12).

And notice what the fear underneath actually is: that you have broken terms, that you are on probation, that a wrong step costs you standing. There are no terms. You were never on a contract that could be voided, because your union was not built out of your performance in the first place.

Fear of getting it wrong is the single biggest reason people stop listening. And perfect love casts it out. I watched this with my own grandson: because Roman knows he cannot be separated from God’s approval or ours, there was no religious baggage in the way when he laid his own hands on his leg and commanded the pain to leave. He was eight. Children learn to hear God’s voice quickly, because nobody has taught them they are far away.

Three Things You Can Do Today

  1. Settle the union question first. Say it out loud: I am one spirit with the Lord. Do not move on until it lands. As he is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17).
  2. Change rooms before you listen. Two minutes with your eyes closed, picturing yourself abiding in him, will do more than an hour of trying harder in the noise.
  3. Run the test. When a thought arrives, ask whether it condemns or convicts, rushes or settles, isolates or includes. Fear always overplays its hand.
  4. Listen for somebody else. A surprising amount of deafness is simply self-absorption. Ask him about a friend rather than about yourself and see how quickly something comes. We are built to face outward.

A Prayer

Father, teach my soul and body to live in the reality my spirit already knows. Quiet the voice that says I am far away. Teach me to recognise you.

And if you are not ready to pray that yet, start here: tell him the truth about where you are, and ask him to make you willing. He is good, and he does not break a bruised reed (Isaiah 42:3).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I learn to hear God’s voice if I have never heard him before?

Start with union rather than technique. You were made one spirit with the Lord the moment you were saved, so there is no distance to cross. Most people who believe they have never heard him have simply been listening for something dramatic while dismissing the settled, kind, specific thoughts that were him all along.

How can I tell God’s voice from my own thoughts?

Use the test above. Fear condemns your identity, rushes you, isolates you, and stays vague. The Father convicts a behaviour without touching who you are, settles you, includes you, and gets specific. Your own anxious thinking almost always sounds like the first column.

Do I have to be spiritually advanced to learn to hear God’s voice?

No. Those can be good, but they are not entry fees. Christ has already qualified you (Colossians 1:12), and you always have access to the throne of grace. Effort aimed at earning access is the very thing that creates the static.

Chris and I teach everything above as a live two-hour online course, and we teach it free to any group of five or more. In two hours your whole group can learn to hear God’s voice together, from the same union you have had all along.

It is not a lecture. We spend the last half hour listening together — you hear for yourself, then for one another, then you say it out loud and test it. Most people arrive unsure they will hear anything at all.

What the two hours cover:

  • Why union comes first, and why striving is the static on the line
  • The three realms, and which one you are currently listening from
  • How to change rooms into the heart realm — practised live, together
  • Telling his voice from the Shadowman, using the test above
  • Live activation: hearing for yourself and for each other
  • A daily rhythm you can keep, and how to help your children learn to hear God’s voice too

What it costs: nothing. No fee, no offering taken, nothing for sale at the end. We use Zoom, or whatever your group already uses. We can also split it across two one-hour evenings if that suits your midweek rhythm better.

Tell us who you are and roughly how many are coming, and we will find a date.
