Spiritual Blindness: 1 Powerful Key to Defeating Fear

It was 5:00 AM this morning when my eyes snapped open. Before my feet even hit the floor, my mind was racing. I was consumed by worry over a specific situation, and within seconds, I realized something terrifying: I had woken up completely paralyzed by spiritual blindness.

In traditional Western Christianity, the standard response to this 5 AM panic is to start striving. We are taught to start begging God for peace, binding demons, or repenting for our lack of faith. We operate from a mindset of separation—believing God is “up there” and we are down here, hopelessly trying to reach Him through the thick fog of our anxiety.

But that is a religious lie. God hasn’t moved. You haven’t lost your salvation or your union with Christ. You have simply fallen asleep to the truth and believed the illusion.

The Shadowman and the Illusion of Spiritual Blindness

In Ted Dekker’s brilliant book, The 49th Mystic, he introduces the concept of the “Shadowman”—a representation of the voice of fear, the carnal mind, and the illusion of separation. That is exactly what hit me at 5 AM. It was the voice of SIN (noun)—that inherent human condition that tries to convince us we are separate from the love and provision of the Father.

As I wrote about in The Problem was SIN (noun) not sins (verb), the true enemy isn’t your behavior; it is the blind mindset that you are disconnected from God.

Second Corinthians 4:4 warns us that “the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel.” But even as believers, when we focus entirely on the physical realm and our earthly problems, we allow the Shadowman to pull a veil over our eyes, causing acute spiritual blindness.

The Practical Reality of Mind Renewal

When I recognized the tactic this morning, I didn’t panic. I didn’t try to “fight” the darkness in my own strength. You cannot fight an illusion; you can only turn on the light.

I immediately grabbed my earphones and put on a teaching about the unconditional, Agape love of the Father. I actively chose to listen to the truth of my identity in Christ. And just like that, the spiritual blindness vanished. The anxiety dissolved.

Romans 12:2 commands us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This isn’t just a nice poetic verse; it is the most practical tool you possess. Mind renewal is how we stop the creeping death of worry from invading the different realms of our world—our health, our marriages, and our businesses.

In fact, this exact process of resting in my identity and renewing my mind was the key that unlocked a massive breakthrough recently in my software business. When you operate from rest instead of panic, heaven’s solutions become obvious.

Blowing Open 10,000 Prison Doors

This morning made me think back to a radical encounter I had 14 years ago. In that moment, the sheer reality of God’s love hit me so hard it felt like 10,000 prison doors—doors I didn’t even know existed—were violently blown open all at once. I remember literally screaming, “Freedom!”

That encounter was the revelation of my justification. It was the sudden realization of the John 3:16 hidden meaning: that God so loved me, He rescued me without any conditions.

But what I experienced at 5 AM today is the daily, practical reality of walking that freedom out. Fourteen years ago, the doors were blown off the hinges. Today, I am becoming deeply, consciously aware of how to actually walk out of the cell whenever the Shadowman tries to convince me I’m still locked inside.

If you are waking up with anxiety, spiritual blindness, or fear, stop begging God to come down and rescue you. He is already there. Christ is in you (Colossians 1:27). Put your earphones in, open the Word, and remind yourself of who your Father is. Let the truth blow the prison doors wide open.
